Weeks round up

The club shop will be open all day on Saturday for any fan who wishes to go and buy a shirt before the big game.

Real Madrid are arriving on Friday afternoon and have reserved the whole hotel NH Santa Cruz for themselves. There are 64 rooms in the hotel so they will have space to spread out. The hotel is in the centre of the city so fans coming in by bus will be able to get all the way to the grounds and not have to walk to the Stadium. The hotel was also used this season by the teams from Osasuna and Valladolid.

CD Tenerife have only lost once with referee Ramírez Domínguez from Navarra. The other four times the team have played under his control there were three wins all at home and a draw.

Team interviews this week included:

Mark Bertran
"It was a pity" said the captain of CD Tenerife, " after the supposed foul and the expulsion of Culebras we lost our balance. We suffered a lot and there was no payment for all our effort. Athletic de Bilbao played a great game and deserved to win"
The defender from Lerida reminded that in spite of this blow, "we are only a point away form being outside the relegation zone and that is the positive though we can take from the round. We need to work hard to win more games." he also noted "we are not giving up the game against Real Madrid. I hope we will take something positive from the game."
Lastly when asked about his injury suffered at the hands of the R. Madrid team. He commented that " I tried to forget the accident and my injury in the Santiago Bernabéu as quickly as possible. Real Madrid with or without Drenthe will be a great rival. I have suffered the worst side of football with the injury and now just want to help the team. I know our fans will be loyal to the team.”, he finished.

Alejandro Alfaro also attended the press conference where he stated the situation was complicated "My goal was not useful. We saw them score really quickly and this was hard. We tried to come back but finally they managed four goals." He then commented that " after the 2-0 which happened so quickly we were a man down. We tried to overcome our bad run of away results but couldn't." he concluded.

On Wednesday interviews were with Nino and Ayoze:

Nino talked first and started with the comment that " Bilbao is forgotten and now we need to think about our next game against Real Madrid. We will need to be at 200% to take something positive from the round. To beat Real Madrid or any other team in the first division is always great. They have a great squad and we will need to compete at the highest level to take something away form the game. The player from Almeria remembered that "there are still rounds left and it is still early to make calculations. We need to go step by step never thinking past the next weekend. Against Real Madrid you can gift them nothing, because in any given moment they can make a great play," he concluded.

Ayoze continued "Against a team like Real Madrid nothing is forgiven. This is an important game for them too. The need to stay close in the points to Football Club Barcelona. But anyway if they want to win they are going to need to play well as we are going to make things difficult for them" When he was asked about starting in San Mames he answered "This was an opportunity for me but things happen and before I really got started I was substituted. I was my turn and I need to move on and wait for another chance" He finished with the comment, " at every training session I try my hardest to show the trainer what I can do but here the important entity is the team and we need to all row in the same direction."

Of all the players playing in the BBVA league very few have played the whole time. Amongst the 14 out of 505 players who have a re Nino and Sergio Aragoneses.
The full list of minutes played can be seen here.

The AS newspaper also mentioned the clubs thanks and commented the fact that mostly the Tenerife fans could be heard better then the Athletic ones.

Player interviews.

Culebras:" This is football. The referee was heavy handed in his calling of the tackle and sent me off. I tried to go around the player and perhaps touched him. He threw hinself on the floor. Maybe you could call penalty but not a red card. I am really hurt by the red card especially for the damage it did the team. No one should have this much bad luck. But we need to go on and win against Real Madrid"

Richi: “We always go out to try and win and more right now in the position we are in. Today we couldn't fight for the three points as everything was very complicated. The 4-1 leaves a bad image but if you analise the game the 2-0 after the penalty..... The circumstances were diffiuclt. With only ten players and attacking it leaves spaces behind. The team is fighting and we are going to give our all in every round.”

Sicilia: “I don't know if it was a penalty or not. I haven't talked to Culebras about the play. The start of the game left us damaged. We always go out to play our best but it doesn't always work out. Now we have a big game against Real Madrid and we need to join together to make something form this round."

Bertrán: “That one play marked the game. We were 10 men and 1-0 down from that moment they were superior to us. I don't know if it was a penalty. We know how much it costs us to make goals and with this president after a normal start you are left feeling down. Now we play Madrid and that will be a great week.”

Mikel: “Our rival was better than us. They did us grave damageAgain and again the resulats away are the same. Athletic knew how to make the most of their chances. The 4-1 says it all but the penalty was decisive. Maybe we could have recovered form a 1-0 but the 2-0 made everthing very complicated. Nothing matters now but the next game.

Game Notes from Bilbao

This was a game I had looked forward to all year. The stadium called San Mames but colloquially called La Catedral is held to be one of the best stadiums in Spain. It is a small stadium in the centre of the city enclosed all the way around with a small pitch but I was expecting more from their fans.
The city is lovely and we ate very well. We managed to meet up with Dave from Armada Sur before the game and had a few drinks in a bar near the stadium. There was a great atmosphere outside the stadium and in spite of the troubles last Thursday between the Athletic fans and the fans from Anderlect there was no trouble.

Yes they can clap well when they score and you could hear their fans behind the goal once or twice but the Tenerife fans who were only about 250 out sung them endlessly. To a point after the game when the Athletic fans actually applauded the Tenerife fans.
Of the CDT fans there was a range of ages. There were elderly fans who couldn't stand the whole game and there was a fair amount of complaining from them when anyone else stood up. Dave and I from Armada Sur with a range of others including 3 fans from Sociedad who were there to support Mikel Alonso. There were fans from the Peña Instinto Blanquiazul who were amazing in their support. Even after the 4th goal by Athletic they sang and sang. The players even came over after the game to thank the fans for their support.

GOALS
1-0: (17’) Llorente, from a penalty. 2-0: (22’) Toquero. 3-0: (53’) Iraola. 3-1: (59’) Alfaro. 4-1: (64’) Gabilondo.

INCIDENTS
In the stadium San Mamés. With 38.000 spectators. The ground was grass and was in good condition. Sunny afternoon, but somewhat cold.

The game started slowly, with both teams playing tactically more than the football. In the 16th minute Culebras was sent off for a foul on Toquero that didn't exist. This really spoiled any chances we might have had.
The penalty was converted into a goal by Llorente which left CD Tenerife in pieces. 5 minutes later Toquero passed the ball to Llorente and he headed it and Toquero finished it in the goal.

After the second goal the game calmed down and CDT started to have chances although none of them were dangerous. and this is how the game reached half time.
After half time the game was more exciting and in the 46th minute Nino had a good chance but it went just outside the post. Only two minutes later Athletico has a goal disallowed as Iraola was offside.
In the 53rd minute, Iraola sentenced the game with a goal. Alfaro managed to score a great goal but it helped nothing and finally Gabilondo scored the 4th for Athletic.

CD Tenerife never gave up and they fought to the end even with one man less.

The club needs stability

The club needs stability

These were the words from Miguel Concepción at a press breakfast on Wednesday morning this week. “We are not going to put the club in danger. We can't afford 15 million euro players.”. The president of El CD Tenerife demonstrated that he has clear ideas about the present and the future of the club.

When questioned by the journalists at the meeting there was more interest in the clubs accounts than their sporting capabilities. The president replied "The last to be paid will be the business owners. When we made this years accounts we did not put money ahead of our sports plans. But we are not going to risk future of the club. It has already been to the edge of disapearing. We need to work to lessen the debts without forgetting our sporting needs. You need to find a balance."

He the economic director commented, “Of course it was more difficult to reduce the debts in the second division, because we had less season ticket holders and less television money.”

“If we go down we will continue to work. This president was bought in when the team was at the point of going down to 2B. I hope this will not happen again”, he added.

“Seventy percent of the clubs funds are held by small shareholders. I am happy it is like this and hope it will continue this way for a long time”, commented Concepción cwhen he was asked about long term plans for CD Tenerife.

At this point Miguel Concepción was asked if he planned to continue as president as next year his five year term ends: “Now is not the time to make this decision. That will be something to decide next season. Now the team needs 100 percent support.”

Another question was asked about the fusing of the club and the promotion company Tenerife Inversiones y Proyectos Deportivos SA. “We are working on the process of the fusing of these two entities : right now we need to value the shares of both. Then it will need to be oted on by both sets of shareholders. It will be done only if it benefits the club.”, reminded the president.

“The plans for the future areto continue paying off the debts and to reinforce the team. The less debts the club has the more players we can buy. We need to continue on this line and consolidate the club amongst the elite teams in Spanish football”, assured Concepción, when questioners insisted to know about the future.

At the end of the breakfast, Concepción wanted to look back and told of the day before the AGM in 2006 when he was named president, when no one wanted to be candidate for president. There was a meeting the night before with 60 business men but when it finally came to the moment that counted there were only 10.

“Of the points that were most important when I took the job the only one missing is to stay in the first division and then to consolidate our position. And we need to continue to continue paying off the debts.”, explained the president.

“I thank the present council for all their support and all the people who have formed part of the council and who are no longer with us. I ask for everyone's support for the three months of competition left for this year" he finished.

Interviews

Interviews with the players after the game included the following:

Sergio Aragoneses - " It is much easier when the fans support you. We believe this might by the definitive victory. It is positive that we did not receive a goal. The result shows the work of the whole team, we have stood together the whole time. Majorca are high in the table on their merits and they made the game really difficult for us but without playing a great game we managed to take control and win. This allows us to look at the future with a more optimistic view. We are all here to work. At this level there are great forwards and our game is to stop their chances. The fans went home happy with the win and the attitude of the team"

Richi Pérez - " We are confident that we can maintain this block and will see if we can go on earning points. After the 1-0 Majorca really tightened their game but we were solid in defence. We like to play well but the opponent likes to too. I was lucky to play for a while and help to secure us a victory. The fans since I arrived here have always supported team. They know that we are trying to play great football, they are concious that this was going to be a complicated year and they have supported us to the death. We tried to hold the ball, get to the opponents end and let them play in our half as little as possible. Against Majorca we played well together and this was important. Our rival is a good team who are strong but we played inteligently and managed to take the three points."

José Antonio Culebras - "This was an important game to help us move out of the zone which no team want to be in. This was good and leaves us with optimism for the future. In the first half they dominated more but they had no chances. In the second half it was more split and this is what you need to try for. You need to make the most of your chances. This was an important game and the fans were a great support. I think it was worth their time to come and watch us. I am going home happy with my work but what is really important is the team and the win. We always want to play well and hope to win. These two thoughts are fundamental to be able to cope with any situation. To manage the things which need sorting. Everything went well and we are happy. It was a great chance to play in the first division and we don't want to mess it up."

Marc Bertrán - " This was a life or death game, very important for us. We suffered like little pigs as we played against a rival who is in the Champions League zone by their own merits. Now we are in as better position and surely with this victory we can dream. We have had a bad run, in many games we have been unlucky. we played a very seerious game and managed to win. Bilbao will be complicated but we have to try and follow Mondays line and take something positive from there."

Ricardo León - " On a day like this, if you can make the fans happy, its the best of the best. Now we need to carry on fighting but today the most important thing is that the team won on this great day.”

Win for CDT

There is a call in the stadium that being a blue and white supporter is a feeling but the feelings last night ranged from joy to suffering. The goal by Nino made the fans go wild and then the rest of the game was spent suffering hoping that Majorca wouldn't equailse. It was three well needed points for Tenerife and I hope they will go on to do well on Sunday.
Athletic have several players not playing either from an accumulation of yellow cards or direct reds and they will be tired as they play Europe league Thursday night. This could be Tenerife's chance for their first away win of the season.

Strange feeling

It is a weird feeling. The weekend is over, back at work and we still haven't played. I guess we will get used to it but this first time it feels very odd.
The team are ready for tonights game and although rumor is that we always loos in Carnival this is not so. We certainly won last year and the AS newspaper calculated how many losses we had over the years and there were more wins than losses and draws.
In the interviews yesterday Mikel Alonso & Ezequiel Luna were the chosen pair.
They talked about the inportance of tonights game against Mallorca.

Alonso explained to the journalists that " we are being visited by a rival in the champions league zone, and this says everything. Mallorca has great dinamics and we really respect that.”
That said he then commented that "I see CD Tenerife doing well with a strong desire to do well, inspite of their position in the table. With a couple of good results everything will seem different. The fans are free to express their opinions"

"They are very important and they need to know they are important" added Alonso, who then commented "all the team want to do a good job so CD Tenerife can reach this seasons objective."

For his part Ezequiel Luna explained that " we need to end this bad run. We are in a difficult moment and need more stability. We need to be solid in defense and score in front."

"Mallorca will be a difficult rival but we need to find our best game to beat them" commented the Tenerife player. "The fans is responding well and a win needs to come soon"

Friday's interviews

Interviews on Friday the 12th of February were with Roman Martinez and Marc Bertran. Given in the press room in the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium but players talked about their desire to beat Mallorca on Monday.

Román Martínez stated that the team " want to stop this bad run. We really want to win on Monday hopefully everthing will come out right against Mallorca."he added. When asked about the teams position in the league table the Argentine added, "It is hard but we need to fight. Together we can fight to the end to achieve the our objective"

Lastly Roman reminded the press that everyone needs to pull together. " Everone needs to do their best, to get up and go on. We need to be confident and just think about Monday. If feel good and am ready for the trainers orders."

Marc Bertrán signaled that “Our confidence in the trainer is total. He is the ideal person to take our ship to sea.”The CDT Captain indicated that the motivation of the team are the best for every game and truly it cost a lot to come up to the first division and it is really important to stay up" he repeated. He finsihed with the comment that " this is going to be a difficult game and although Mallorca has dificulties away we need to fight. We want to see the fans happy."

Training intensifies for the game on Monday.

The first team in CD Tenerife continued their trainingon Friday in preparation for Monday nights game against RCD Mallorca. This will be the 22nd round of the lBBV league. The team trained for an hour and 50 minutes in the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium. Amongast other things there was a talk form their chief trainer José Luis Oltra. Then they warmed up and worked both at ball skills and with pressure exercises. The session finshed with a game between two teams. All the players started out at training including the winger Carlos Bellvis but he only took part in some of the group training so he could continue with his recovery plan.

This morning the team again trained in the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium from 10am and after that trainer José Luis Oltra had his usual press conference. The team trained today for 90 minutes this is the penultimate session before the game against Baleric team.

The session started at 10am and the players practised strategies and finshed with shots at goal. The next training will be tomorrow, Sunday in The Heliodoro form 10am

La práctica tuvo lugar en el Heliodoro y dio comienzo pasadas las 10:00 horas. Tras el habitual calentamiento se llevó a cabo trabajo de estrategia y más tarde centros y remates. Carnival queen

What has this got to do with football you ask yourselves.
The Carnival queen competition was last night and the lovely Alicia San Juan was judged to be the winner. Judged by whom you ask?
By our own Pablo Sicilia amongst others.

Not only is she now queen but she will also make the kick off for Monday nights game against Mallorca.

Mallorca arriving

Real Mallorca will be arrivng on Sunday with a stop in Sevilla on their way. They are due to arrive about 10 am an the north and will be staying at the Hotel Silken Atlántida, in the Avenida Tres de Mayo. Anyone out in Santa Cruz fro carnival on Sunday night should try to make as much noise as possible so they don't get to sleep. (only kidding)

Preparation for next Monday's game.

The players are training today in the Mundalito stadium at 10 am and the rest of the week in the Heliodoro

Thursday 10:00 El Mundialito Training
Friday 10:00 Heliodoro Training
Saturday 10:00 Heliodoro Training
Saturday - Heliodoro Press Conference JL Oltra
Sunday 10:00 Heliodoro Training
Sunday - Heliodoro List of players
Monday 20:00 Heliodoro CD Tenerife-RCD Mallorca

Tickets for Mondays game will go on sale from tomorrow Friday until the start of the game. Friday to Sunday the ticket offices in the stadium will be open from 10:00 a 13:00 and from 17:00 a 20:00. Monday the ticket offices will be open all day. Tickets will also be available in Bar Canario (Puerto de la Cruz) and in the Librería Papelería Raquel y Carla (Playa de Las Américas).

Interviews yesterday were with Ayoze & Ricardo in the press room in the Mundialito training grounds. Both home grown players talked abgout the importance of Monday's game against Real Mallorca.

“We are enthused to change the present situation. Next Monday we are going to give our all. With a victory things will seem different”. This is how Ayoze talked to the press.

He then continued, “In the changing room we are very much unified. We need to think about the game against Mallorca and no further. We need to believe in the work we are doing day by day. It is true that this mondays teeams season has been very good, above all at home. Mallorca can count on some great players and we need to bear that in mind. We need to win against Mallorca becuase amongst other reasonsever week there are less games until the end of the season.”

When Ayoze was asked about his chances for starting on Monday as international player Dani Kome has been stopped form playing for 5 yellow cards. He replied "I am hopeful as I am every week. I always play and train my best. We all have total confidence in the trainer."

“The fans put everything form their side and in this round we need to do all all for them"finished Ayoze.

Form his side, Ricardo sent a message of hope to the Tenerife fans: “We need to keep on fighting. I know we are going through a hard time. But we need to look for a positive resultwhich will allow us to move up. We are going to react.”

From the teams organiser, “lWhat we most need is a positive result. From there, dwe should continue on a positive run to get out of this position”.

He cosidered too that “the technical team are woking in a fantastic fashion and if we are down in relegation it is because the players are not responding. Between us all we need to fight to go on.”

CA OSASUNA

CD TENERIFE

REFEREE
Bernardino González Vázquez, from Galicia. Yellow card for local player Aranda and for visitor Kome.

GOAL
1-0: (49’) Aranda, in a single play.

INCIDENTS
Played in the Reyno de Navarra stadium. The ground was in good condition. The afternoon was cold. There were 16.500 spectators.

As it was to be expected the first minutes were red. Camacho's team came out in force and Sergio Aragoneses had to work hard through several shots at goal. After fifteen minutes Ricardo had CDT's first shot at goal although it didn't go in.

With the passing of time, Osasuna continued to dominate the game but not as strongly. Oltra's players tried to impose their game but they couldn't overcome the pressure of the team from Navarra. After thirty minutes Aragoneses was still the best visiting player.

Alfaro was then in charge of testing the reflexes of Ricardo, in an action which served to wake up the blue and whites. The Andalucian tried again a few minutes later. The island players carried on around Ricardo's goal but they couldn't create a clear chance. At half time the score was still 0-0.

In the second half, Osasuna came back in force and Aranda scored which put Osasuna ahead. Shortly after the referee disalowed a goal by the Tenerife side.

Oltra didn't take long in making changes and kome who had a yellow card was changed for Dinei. Perhaps the intention of the trainer was to make the most of passes to the centre. And aftr that Omar came on for the first time since his injury.

A little before the end Juanlu was changed for Angel. CD Tenerife tried everything but continue to be uable to cerate and possibilities for a goal and that is how the game continued to the very end. Nino was the last to try but his shot was not centred.

Injured in Pamplona

Not us I was just reading about the players who are injured on the Osasuna side. They are missingJuanfran who has just been operated on for apedecitus, also Oier & Delporte and Pandiani didn't tain today as he has flu. You should never be happy about others misfortune but the less players they have available the better our chances for a win have to be.
I have a good feeling about this game. This is going to be the one we win. It ws umoured this week in the newspapers that the reason CD Tenerife didn't buy any new players was because the 10 million euros paid by the TV stations for this season has been co-opted by the Spanish tax man. This seems like a reason not to have bought anyone. It would have been better for the fans if this is true that it had been announced by the club and not leaked but the press. I think it will bring the fans together behind the players the team has and there should be more support. The CDT fans are great for this. An example would be when Sergio Aragoneses was sick last season there was tremendous cheers for Luis Garcia every time he touched the ball.

In an interview today Jose Luis Oltra said “At the begining of the season there were 38 finals and now there are only 18. osasuna is an intense team with great dynamics but we need to ignore that. We need our first away win.I see we have a strong group and we need to demonstrate that." When askd if he felt his decisions were being questioned he replied he felt "respected, supported and backed-up. I have always had faith in the team and just now I belive in them even more if that is possible. We need to look to the future."

02/02/2010

Day off

The team had a day off today which was probably no bad thing as training was cancelled due to storms yesterday and the weather is no better today.
No one was bought or borrowed in the winter window. Almeria and Tenerife were the only two teams in the bottom of the table who didn't use the window to buy somone.
The club website has a calculation for how many minutes the players have played this season. Nino and Sergio aragoneses are the only two players to have played all the possible time in the league.

It has been approved today by the Clubs that one first division game will be played on Monday nights and one second division game will be played on Friday nights. For the first division this will start in round 22 so from Monday the 15th onwards. Something to bear in mind if you care coming form the UK for the weekend to see the game. My hope is that we will now get to know earlier which game is when but I am not holding my breath.

Interviews after the Zaragoza game.

When Zaragoza went down two seasons ago I felt then it was an aberation. They have spent loads of money to stay up buying players left right and everywhere. In the last 15 minutes of the game last night it showed. The last 2 goals where scored by players bought in the winter break.
Last season Numancia came up and said they would buy no one new but just enjoy the season. If this was what our president had said I wouldn't be fed up now. BUT he allowed us to dream. He talked about three years and playing for the Europe league. Nothing wrong with dreaming but sometimes it needs to be followed through.
When all is said and done we will have had a year in the first division and earned 8 million euros which we wouldn't have earned without going up which will help the clubs accounts.

I have had my say and here is what our trainer and players had to say:

Jose Luis Oltra
"What hurts most is what might have been, because it is difficult to assume a loss like this one. We scored early and controlled the game. We played a good first half and inspite of that we were 0-0 at half time. I had the sensation that we could go to 2-0 in a counter attack. Our rival had no chances. But they penalty did us a lot of damage and without realising more goals arrived. In eight minutes they scored three goals. It is dificult to explain the result and that is the reality of it".

Ricardo: “The game escaped us after all our hard work. The changing room is destroyed. The team had the game under control, in front of a rival who had no chances. In an isolated play they received a penalty. But we had time to react. The second and third goals were terrible blows. We made an enormous effort to get in the lead and with nothing threw it all away. But we need to keep on trying”.

Mikel: “It is a very painful loss, a 1-3 more than clear. The 1-1 did us tremendous damage. CD Tenerife carried most of the game, but they were lucky, and that is what counts. The results say everything. After we scored we stepped back and had no more clear chances. Our rival reacted because theya re in a difficult situation too. This is why we stepped back. They were very acurate with their shos at goal”.

Juanlu: “The game got away from us in one single play. Then they made two more chances and both went in and we lost the game. We can get to the goal but have no luck when it com,es to scoring. We need to improve this. I scored a goal but it means nothing this time. We need to stay calm and try to put ourselves back together so we can move on to the next game. In the first half we should have scored we deserved to. I belive the penalty was a high price to pay as with that the whole game turned.”.
